Writing Assignment: Complete This Sentence

by Randy Murray on February 25, 2011

Sometimes to get started writing all you need is a little push. That’s the overall purpose of Writing Assignments, but sometimes it takes something with a bit more point.

In music, an unresolved phrase builds tension. The same thing can happen with an unfinished sentence. The writer will naturally want to resolve the tension they feel by completing the sentence, the phrase, the . . .

So you leap in and finish the thought. And with the momentum that’s created, you can continue exploring, seeing what comes next. It’s like finding one’s self on top of a slide. All you need is a little push to find yourself shooting down and then you’re off the end and up and running across the playground.

This time, I won’t offer an example. I don’t want to resolve the tension for you. I want you to feel the suspense, to let the tension grow until you must finish the sentence and see what happens next.

In today’s exercise, complete this sentence and see where it takes you:

The dog ran out in the road in front of me and before I knew it . . .

The dog ran out in the road in front of me and before I knew it she was jumping on me with her muddy paws, licking the sweat off my face, all the while whimpering her sweet forgive-me sound. That little escape artist! She knew I had been running all over the neighborhood for the past half hour shouting her name. Now we both need a bath!
