I do not give in to despair when I see bad writing. I’m hopeful when someone makes the effort to write.
It’s perfectly OK to suck at writing. It’s just not OK to keep on sucking.
And it’s essential to know if you suck or not.
How will you know if you suck? You’ll do the work of writing and then give your work over to someone who is more skilled than you. Let them mark up your work and make it bleed with red ink. And then you really should listen to what they are trying to tell you.
Consider what they’ve said. Then rewrite what you’ve written.
Eventually, you’ll begin to understand how writing works. You’ll begin to understand when your writing isn’t doing what you want. You’ll begin to know. Then slowly, ever so slowly, you will suck less and less. Maybe sometimes not at all.
But do not give up. Push on. Suck less. Continue to work with better writers and editors.
Oh, there will be days when you suck mightily.
But you’ll recognize these days and you’ll know what to do.
