I have a simple rule about brands and logos on my clothing: I won’t pay you to display your commercial advertising. If you want to GIVE me things or pay me to display your logos, I just might. I’ll deck myself out, covered with company logos like a race car driver—if you to pay me.
I have a closet full of t-shirts, hats, and other clothing that I’ve been given by companies over the past couple of decades. A great many of them are no longer in business (and may have only been in business long enough to distribute a few t-shirts). I wear them to the beach, to work out, and generally to bum around in. I’m not too picky about what I wear to do those things as long as the message isn’t offensive.
But I’ll be damned if you think that I’m going to pay top dollar to buy your stuff or to display the name of a celebrity or some corporate message on my body.
This doesn’t necessarily come from my age. It’s more from my profession as a marketer. I won’t do your marketing for free. And I certainly won’t pay for the privilege. IF you want me to promote your brand then you need to pay me or give me something.
I think that’s a good way for everyone to approach brand display.
And in my opinion, those who do hand their money over to display huge logos are dupes. Suckers. Rubes. You’ve been conned. It’s not fashionable.
You’re paying for the right to be a billboard.
Don’t.
