One of the great joys that my wife and daughters share with me is taking a big stack of books to read while lying on the beach or about the beach house.
Here’s my list for this year:
- Wayfaring Stranger by James Lee Burke. I buy each of Burke’s books in hardback, which he conveniently releases each year just before we go on vacation. Burke is one of America’s great underrated writers. Why? Because his books are considered “mysteries” and thus are only genre books and not worthy of readers of literary fiction. Bullshit.
- Codex by Les Grossman, the author of the Magician Trilogy.
- Mr. Midshipman Easy by Frederick Marryat. a sea adventure novel from 1836 that predates both Hornblower and my beloved Patrick O’Brian novels featuring Jack Aubrey and Steven Maturin.
- Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts. A book I’ve had my eye on for a long time. Perhaps this book’s time to be read has come around.
What are you reading this summer? And more, reward your favorite authors and purchase their books!
