Simple Productivity Tip Of The Day: Clean Your Closet Before You Make Your List

by Randy Murray on December 20, 2010

This may be too late for this year, but here’s a tip that can help you be more productive and reduce the clutter that weighs you down: before you make that list of things you want for Christmas or a birthday, clean out the most cluttered part of your home or office.

When it’s that time of year when people say, “What do you want? Please send me your list,” spend a few minutes cleaning first. Cleaning out the garage or basement has nearly made me swear off possessions altogether. Say hello to Friar Randy.

It is very easy to become enamored with the latest gadget or shinny thing, but the cure for that obsession is to take a peek at that overstuffed closet or desk drawer and commit to do something about it before you get one more thing. Be ruthless. Give away, sell, or recycle things that you don’t need and make space. You might find, once you’ve created some space, that you no longer want new things to fill it. Space means potential. And sometimes, potential is better and more exciting than a thing you might fill that space with.

Space also means room to create, room to work. So clear some space and see what happens!
