I have always recommended working ahead, writing, editing, and reviewing prior to publishing. I believe that it’s the only way professionals should publish. Excluding breaking news there’s no reason why you shouldn’t write weeks in advance, based upon a carefully planned editorial calendar.
I had that lesson reinforced for me a week ago when I became violently ill from a stomach bug (the less said about that, the better). One thing that helped me relax was knowing that I’d worked far enough ahead to not have to worry about writing something new each day.
I don’t think that I could have managed to produce anything cogent in those first few days. And I didn’t have to.
If you are writing and publishing on the same day, if your readers are depending on you for new content, then you are at risk from the vagaries of the world and circumstances beyond your control. Build a schedule. Make a plan. Write in advance and work with an editor.
Then relax.
