Five Simple Writing Tasks: 3–Touch Something Living–Animal Day

by Randy Murray on May 29, 2013

All this week I’m offering up simple writing tasks. Each task is designed around one of the key attributes of good writing that is often overlooked: mindfulness. Each task is simple, direct, and will not take much time. I urge you to try them all this week and keep them to try again in the future.

Task #2: Touch something living–animal day.

Today start the day off by touching a living animal, if possible, and excluding humans.

If you are unlikely to see a live animal today, save this task for a day when you will.

Before you touch this animal, look at it, consider it, and then, approach and with permission (animals will let you know if you have permission to touch them—their human companions will as well), touch this living creature. For this brief moment, the two of you are connected.

Now go about your day.

Throughout this day, think about the act of touching this living, breathing thing. Think about the animal’s possible day. Think about how it responded to your touch. Think about how this interaction has altered your trajectory on this particular day.

At the end of the day, write about these thoughts.
