Five Simple Writing Tasks: 2–Touch Something Living–Plant Day

by Randy Murray on May 28, 2013

All this week I’m offering up simple writing tasks. Each task is designed around one of the key attributes of good writing that is often overlooked: mindfulness. Each task is simple, direct, and will not take much time. I urge you to try them all this week and keep them to try again in the future.

Task #2: Touch Something Living–Plant Day

Start this day by seeking out a living thing from the world of plants. Pick one specimen, then approach it, look at it carefully, then touch it. In a pinch you may select something from the refrigerator, but I prefer something that is vital, alive, and will continue growing after today, not end up as tonight’s meal.

Then go about your day. As the day passes, think about this plant, how it looked, and most important, how it felt to touch it. Think about it often.

Then, at the end of the day, write about the act of touching this plant. Do not write immediately after you touch one, but only after you’ve spent an entire day thinking about this plant.
