Ask yourself this question and answer it honestly. It’s not for public consumption. It’s just for you.
Is your first draft good enough?
Mine? No. My first draft is written in a rush of idea and passion. Sometimes I strike gold, but more often I find that I haven’t quite gotten the idea across.
But I’m no genius. I’m a working craftsman. My training as a writer didn’t allow me to be isolated from my readers. That’s the pain and pleasure of being a playwright. Eventually we have to sit in a room and listen to others read our words out loud.
It’s painful. Embarrassing. And very, very revealing.
And I’d never bring my first draft in for someone else to read. I don’t want to waste the time of either of us. Before the reader gets what I’ve written the draft is read and revised multiple times.
But that’s me. What’s your answer?
