Sharpen Your Writing Skills: Write Without And.

by Randy Murray on October 4, 2012

Here’s a simple task that may be more difficult than you think: write a one page essay on the art of writing without using the word “and.”

And is a simple connector, but it’s often abused, resulting in run on, confusing, and unreadable sentences. Try this exercise today and see if you can write well without the word and without smashing ideas together.

Note: the previous sentence used “and” twice. Warm up by rewriting it and remove both “ands” to convey the same idea (it will result in a better and clearer sentence).

Good luck.
