Simple Productivity Task Of The Day: Let Something Go Out Of Your Control

by Randy Murray on March 22, 2012

Do you know that feeling of panic when you fear that a project is about to spin out of control?

Here’s what I’ve discovered you can do when you feel that way. Let go.

But won’t that make things worse? Maybe, but probably not.

When you’re feeling that panic, it’s more about you and less about your project. And even if things do get worse, by letting go of control, by stepping back, you’ll be more likely to see what is really wrong and think about the right things to do.

I didn’t say give up. I said let go. Don’t try to control things.

When you’re in panic mode, you simply react. That will typically result in you making bad decisions or expending energy and resources to no good end. So when things are going bad, instead of doubling down, of asserting control, just step back, breathe, and see what happens next.

The best managers don’t make things happen, they help things happen.

That’s my advice: practice letting things go out of control.
