Look what I found hiding in the basement. Another Halloween monster just for writers. This one is a little harder to kill.
It’s name is Your Previous Work Wasn’t That Good.
Here’s why it’s difficult to kill: most of the time it’s telling the truth. When I was younger it was right pretty much all of the time. But now I know when the work that I’ve done is good, sometimes really really good. And on occasion the work is brilliant, if I must say so myself.
Frankly, I don’t need this evil shade to tell me when my work isn’t good enough. I accept that much of my earlier work was that of a student, struggling to find his way. Now I know how to turn back to fresh work when it needs another pass.
Here’s how you kill it: look it square in that empty-hole of a face and tell it, “I know.”
Then show it what you’re currently working on with pride. It will scream and flee into the darkness.
