Writing Assignment: Defend Your Favorite Album

by Randy Murray on January 13, 2012

Your favorite band sucks.

Music can be a way of defining your personality or of including yourself in a larger group. But start talking about music and what you’ll also quickly discover is that others may dismiss or attack your musical loves. People will judge you based upon your musical choices. Don’t worry, I won’t. I’ll judge you by what’s on your bookshelves.

Your favorite band, music, album, can be an emotional topic for you. And it’s perfect for you to write about.

For today’s writing assignment, pick out a favorite album and write your defense of its greatness. Use your emotional connection with the music, the artist, to present a strong and clear argument in its favor. Your reader won’t have the benefit of listening to the music. All that they will have will be your words, your advocating that they do listen and learn to love it as you do. You only have one shot, so make sure you write a convincing argument.

Bonus: if you complete this assignment, send it to me. I’ll consider it for including as a guest post on my new series: Required Listening.

I’d been meaning to write this post for a while, and this Writing Assignment helped me get it done. Thanks, Randy.
