Product Review: Swiss-Tech Multi-Key

by Randy Murray on March 11, 2010

I always carry a pocket knife. Except when I can’t. And I do like multi-tools, but I don’t like their bulk. So I’m always looking for great tools that don’t add to the things I have to carry.

And one thing that I almost always have with me when I’m out of the house is my car keys. It’s probably the most James Bondian gadget in my daily equipment selection.

I was working booth duty at a trade show a couple of years back and the guy from IBM at the next table was giving away a very nice premium item. He gave me one, too. It was a Swiss-Tech Multi-Key. It is ideal for my needs. In fact, most of the time I forget it’s even on my key ring.

When closed, it looks just like a key. I’ve been through airport security with it many times [Note: I am NOT advocating or recommending doing this. You run the chance of losing it AND having some up close and personal time with some of the nice people at the TSA.]

But when I do remember it, it is very handy. The blade is very small, but sharp enough to help out in a pinch.  I’ve never used the serrated edge, but it should work to cut through cord or small sticks. It can also function as a Phillips head, regular or slot head, and micro (eye glass screw size). Frankly, I use it more as a screwdriver than anything else. I find that if you open it to ninety degrees it gives you enough leverage so you can loosen or tighten most screws.

It also works great as a bottle opener. Very handy.

They’re available online. I’ve also found them at the Container Store and used them as stocking stuffers for the girls this Xmas. They loved them and put them right on their key chains.  You should be able to find them for around $12.

Highly recommended.

That sounds better than my Gerber. I’ll have to check that out.
Thanks!

Good: it’s very small
Bad: it’s so small and like a key you’ll forget you have it!
