Nothing To Write About

by Randy Murray on June 30, 2014

Why didn’t you write today? “I don’t have anything to write about.”

And that, my friend, is a lie you tell yourself.

Of course you have things to write about. If a friend were to drop by or invite you out you’d have lots of things to talk about. A family member calls and asks, “What’s new?” and you have many, many things to say. The latest news makes you shake your fist and yell at the TV. That book you read, the movie or TV show you saw, that realization in the shower or the thoughts from your walk—these are all things that stir your mind.

You have lots to write about. Lots and lots of things.

They may not be things that other people will want to read. They may not be something that others will pay you for. They may not result in a great work of literature.

Who cares?

They’re all fodder for your writing.

When you say, “I have nothing to write about,” you are talking about something else. You are giving yourself a reason, not a good one, not to write. It’s an excuse, not the truth.

Do the work. Write.

Randy - Well said. I took a three month break from my blog. It wasn’t because I didn’t have anything to write, it’s because I convinced myself I was too busy. I then took a month to put together some great content that I’ll publish weekly (I know we disagree on this frequency). While I’ll only publish once a week of so, I’m back to writing almost every single day. My editor says the editing is getting easier again. Us writers are like athletes - use your God given skill or watch them wither.

When I offer advice like this I really should make clear that I’m talking about writing, not publishing. It’s terrific that you’re back to writing daily. That can’t help but make you a better writer.

Publish when you will. That’s a different topic. But today, write!
